Transnistria, in a single day. It’s a thin strip of land along the Dniester that broke away from Moldova in the early 1990s and still runs itself like a Soviet republic, with its own currency, its own border post, and a hammer and sickle on the flag. The day started in Bender, where the Ottoman-era fortress sits on the riverbank, and ended in Tiraspol, a capital of wide boulevards with Lenin still standing outside the parliament and a T-34 tank parked by the war memorial.
