Four days in Moldova, one of Europe’s least-visited countries, split between the capital and the countryside to the north. Chișinău was Soviet apartment blocks next to Orthodox domes, the Arc of Triumph in Cathedral Park, and the crowded stalls of the flea market. After that I went north to the Orhei area, where the Răut river cuts a deep loop through the limestone and monks once carved a monastery straight into the cliff face at Orheiul Vechi, above the village of Butuceni.
